America, named for Amerigo Vespucci, discovered or rediscovered by the great Christopher Columbus in search of a direct route to India. Pilgrims board a ship called the "Mayflower", leave Europe to seek freedom in the America's, make landfall because of beer? The same man who flies a kite in a storm, invents the bi-focal lens, and a safe indoor stove, and gives away his fortune who is he? A young land surveyor turned farmer, leads men into battle loosing most, is never wounded, wins the war, then is called to lead again who am I? Home schooled by mom, becomes a voracious reader, never goes to college but becomes a lawyer, likes hats for storage and becomes the spark that kills nearly a million people who?
Why don't we teach American History anymore? Most kids have no clue how our country started. Who did what and why. The stories behind the men and women who built the greatest civilization the world has ever seen. We seem to be more concerned in teaching students about how bad we are. How we must always be considerate of how people feel and not offend anyone. Facts are no longer important. No one is wrong. No one looses. You don't need to work get welfare. Spend more than you have, spend, spend, the government will bail you out. What's in it for me!
We need start doing the things we did just a few generations ago. Learning the story behind the story. More kids know what their favorite celebrity has for lunch than know how many stripes are on our flag without looking. Do you know? We need to feed the poor from our pockets not the governments. We need to return to a country of laws not of men and "Ask not what your can do for you" and children "ask what you can and can do for your country".
